Age of Kings (2) – Your Heart’s Desire

[audio:ec_080314.mp3]

Last week we started this series Age of Kings and we used the story of King Zedekiah to illustrate it is in human nature to want to be king. We have a tendency to want to be completely autonomous and unaccountable. I struggle with this almost every day, I want to do what I want to do, and I don’t want to do what others tell me to do. And eventually, this rebellion against God’s will for my life leads to pain. But God unconditionally loves me and loves you, and He invites us to open the door to our throne room and let Him be king. Are you willing to do that? It is simply your choice, and when you do, you will experience blessings like never before.

Today we are going to continue on this series and we are going to talk about another king, perhaps this one a little bit more well-known than King Zedekiah. But before I tell you who it is we are talking about today, let me first ask you this, have you ever looked at your life and wonder, How did I get here? Why am in the situation I am in right now? When we struggle in our marriages, families, finances or careers it’s often tempting to blame circumstances, other people or even luck. But Scripture points to something else… something that we might have a little bit more control over. The Bible says that we need to set our heart on the Lord because what our hearts most value sets the course for our lives.

Moving Forward

Where you’ve set your heart is reflected in the things that are most important to you. Is your heart set on something worth seeking? In light of what you want, what do you need to choose to value?

Discussion Questions

1. What are the things you most value? Why are they important to you?

2. Have you ever followed bad advice? If so, what happened?

3. Talk about a time when you faced disappointment. Who or what did you blame for your circumstances? How did that affect the way you handled the disappointment?

4. What is your heart set on right now? How is it affecting the direction of your life?

5. How do you think your life might be different if you set your heart on seeking God?
