Welcome to CROLCC, we are so glad you are here worshiping with us today.  I want to once again say thank you to everyone for making this place a great place of worship.  I am so encouraged to see everyone’s enthusiasm to serve and to volunteer.  You make this place a great church.  Your dedication, your smile, and your kindness is what makes our guests comfortable to explore faith here.  Thank you for your hard work, and thank you for continuing to treat this place like your home.  Thank you for allowing God to use you to share your faith with others.

Today we are starting a new series and we will be looking at the lives of some of the kings found in the Old Testament. It’s a fascinating piece of history because it reads like a Hollywood movie script.  And, there is something in all of us that wants to be king. It’s good to be king because kings are autonomous and unaccountable, right? A king doesn’t obey the law; he makes the law. And when the law gets in his way, he breaks it. But there’s a simple lesson that kings never seem to learn: rebellion against God always leads to pain.

Moving Forward

You belong to God. He loves you. You have to decide whether to humble yourself to him or press on and eventually suffer the consequences of your attempts to be autonomous. God didn’t spare his own Son to gain your salvation. He won’t spare your wealth, health, or marriage to get your attention.

Discussion Questions

1. Talk about a time when you watched someone else make a poor choice. Did you try to intervene? What happened?

2. When have you told yourself you could manage the consequences of your own sin? What was the result? Looking back, in what way did God offer you a way out?

3. Why is it so difficult for us to bow our knee to God and acknowledge our dependence on him?

4. Read Revelation 3:19. Why would God rebuke those he loves?

5. In what area of your life are you trying to maintain autonomy? What can you do this week to repent and make things right with God and others?
